U-W-S To Switch Conferences in 2015-2016

Duluth, MN (KDAL) - The University of Wisconsin Superior will leave the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference beginning with the 2015-2016 academic year.  The conference change ends a 102-year affiliation.  U-W-S Athletic Director Steve Nelson says, “This really is a bittersweet day for us.  On the one hand we are excited to see what the future holds…but on the other hand there is some emotion that comes with leaving the only conference we have been a part of.” Why make the move?  Nelson attributed the decision to the school’s lengthy travel times, which were the longest in the WIAC.  He adds that, “The size discrepancy cannot be ignored, either…Now most of the schools are four and five times larger than we are.” That, as Nelson says, leads to U-W-S receiving less funding and resources than other WIAC schools.  Because the UMAC doesn’t sponsor ice hockey as varsity sports, the Yellowjacket men's and women's hockey teams will remain in the WIAC.  The College of St. Scholastica and Northland College are members of the UMAC.
