DULUTH, MN (KDAL) - A social media challenge that calls on people to jump into cold water to raise cancer awareness should not be attempted in the Duluth ship canal. The U-S Army Corps of Engineers is cautioning anyone thinking of jumping off the piers about the serious dangers and laws against diving and swimming in federal navigation channels. A Corps employee recently stopped a college student who wanted to take the "Cold Water Challenge for Cancer" from jumping into the freezing waters of the ship canal near the Aerial Bridge. In addition to the dangers of the deep water and strong currents, is the "gasp reflex," when the shock of the sudden cold water causes the person to inhale the water into their lungs resulting in suffocation, unconsciousness and death.
