Duluth, MN (KDAL) - The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore will be closing some sites on Oak Island due to an uptick in bear activity. Park officials say two bears have been frequenting the dock area of Oak Island and have even boarded boats and caused minor property damage. Staff say they don’t believe the bears have gotten human food yet. And they’d like to keep it that way. Beginning Friday morning group site B as well as campsites two and three will be closed. The dock will be closed during the overnight and to most day-use. However, visitors with valid camping permits for group site A or campsites 1, 4 or 6 can be dropped off at the dock as long as they leave the closed area A-S-A-P. Park officials are hopeful that active deterrence will teach the bears to be afraid of humans so that they don’t have to close the entire island.
