GRAND PORTAGE, MN (KDAL) - A U-S Coast Guard boat crew on Sunday afternoon rescued 2 men and a woman who encountered high winds and waves while kayaking on Lake Superior near Grand Portage. After a mayday call from the kayakers around 4:30 Sunday afternoon, the Coast Guard launched a 25 foot response boat from their station in Grand Marais. Just before 5, the crew arrived on the scene and took the three people on board and towed the kayaks back to the Grand Portage marina. All three were wearing life jackets and had no medical concerns. The Coast Guard says the incident shows the importance of having a reliable means of communication such as a handheld marine radio with GPS capabilities with you on the lake.
