Duluth, MN (KDAL) - Old Man Winter isn’t stopping the 41st Annual American Birkebeiner. Initially event organizers had decided to cancel Friday morning's Junior Birkie because they were concerned with participants and volunteers accessing the Telemark Lodge, where the event is normally held. However, Media P-R Director and Sponsorship Director Susan Kendrick says they reversed course and held the event in downtown Hayward. Some 75 youngsters turned out for the 4-K untimed that departed from the downtown and looped over a golf course. Considering the last minute change, Kendrick says participation was great. As far as Saturday’s American Birkebeiner goes there’s one small change at the end of the race. Kendrick says the changing area has been moved to the elementary school, two blocks away. Despite the heavy snowfall, Kendrick says the area has been abuzz with race-goers and participants, just as it should be. Downed tree limbs from the high winds earlier in the day have since been cleared up, and Kendrick adds that the course itself is in great shape.
