Duluth, MN (KDAL) - At last check, Bayfield County authorities were withholding the name of a man who had apparently drowned Thursday morning. According to the sheriff’s office, two men had gone out to Basswood Lake in the Town of Delta to fish. While they had fished the lake before, the pair were trying to get out on the lake at another spot due to the amount of ice and snow at their normal access point. While en route investigators say one of the men, a 68 year-old who has not been identified, broke through the ice. His friend tried unsuccessfully to pull him out of the water. Rescuers later pulled the man out, but he had already died. Investigators believe the man was crossing over a channel in the lake with an active current below.
