DULUTH, MN (KDAL) - The St. Louis County Environmental Services Department has established "Take It to the Box" unwanted medication drop off sites at law enforcement centers around the county. In the last three months, over 200 pounds of pharmaceuticals have been collected from the six drop box locations in Virginia, Hibbing, Eveleth, Gilbert, Ely and Babbitt. Those drugs were then taken to a facility in Fosston, Minnesota for incineration. The service is provided with assistance from a Minnesota Pollution Control Agency grant and is designed to keep residents from the improper disposal of medications which could lead to adverse effects on fish and wildlife and accidental poisonings of children and pets. Additional medicine Drop Boxes, coordinated by the WLSSD, are located in Duluth, Hermantown and Proctor law enforcement centers.
