DOUGLAS COUNTY, WI (KDAL) - More details are emerging on the cause of last week's Douglas County fire. Wisconsin DNR officials said in a release a logging crew was harvesting timber with a Timberjack 840 feller/buncher on industrial timber land owned by Lyme St. Croix Forest Company. According to investigators, the fire started under the head of the cutting device, which was operated by the company Ray Duerr Logging. They added there was no sign of the machine's saw coming into contact with a rock or that the equipment appeared faulty, and they were able to rule out all other causes based on evidence. Workers on site acted quickly in attempt to extinguish the blaze and immediately called 911, according to the DNR. Officials said the entire logging crew stayed on the scene and has been extremely cooperative throughout the process. The investigation found no negligence was involved and the fire was not set intentionally. The DNR has recommended no criminal charges be pursued.
