DULUTH, MN (KDAL) - Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night could keep about 70 enthusiastic Duluthians from coming out to support the continuation of Saturday mail service through the United States Postal Service. The noon-time rally Sunday at the corner of Lake Avenue and Superior Street featured speeches from local council members, union leaders, postal employees and a reading of letters from the Minnesota congressional delegation. Many talked about the burden on seniors if Saturday service was to go away, pointing out how difficult it would be for them to get needed medication. One speaker noted that sometimes the postal carrier is the first to notice if something has gone wrong at the home of a senior. Duluth Council Member Sharla Gardner talked about how important the service is when the power goes out: "What do you do when the power goes out? You have your mail, you have your information, you have your paper delivered, you have your Labor World delivered; you have your information that you need to make intelligent decisions about your lives, and that's what's so important."
