BAYFIELD, WI (KDAL) - Two people were rescued by the US Coast Guard Tuesday morning near the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior when their 26 foot boat started taking on water. The search and rescue controller was contacted at 6:44 a-m by a person on board the pleasure craft to report the boat was taking on water at a fast rate after they hit a submerged log. The Coast Guard station in Bayfield responded and arrived on the scene near Hermit Island within 12 minutes. The disabled boat was continuously pumped out while it was towed to a marina in Bayfield. Nobody was injured in the incident and a Coast Guard spokesman says the boaters did everything right in contacting help by VHF-FM radio and putting on their life jackets. The surface temperature of the water was just 41 degrees. The names and hometowns of the boaters were not released.
