DULUTH, MN (KDAL) - Twenty-two-year-old Bazu Worku of Ethiopia has won the 37th running of Grandma's Marathon with an unofficial time of 2:11:14. Sarah Kiptoo, 23, of Santa Fe, New Mexico, paced the women and won with a course-record time of 2:26:31. Worku finished 31 seconds ahead of second-place Ernest Kebenei, and was about a minute-and-a-half off the course record of 2:09:37 set in 1981 by Dick Beardsley. Worku was in 10th place and part of a tight lead-pack at mile 16, and by mile 19 had taken the lead outright by a good six seconds. By mile 25 his lead was 15 seconds, and from there it never got closer. Nineteen-year-old Eliud Ngetich finished third with a time of 2:11:59.
Some predicted the conditions were perfect for Beardsley's 32-year-old record to fall, but it was not to be. Maybe next year.
