SUPERIOR, WI (KDAL) - Following last June's flooding, a new culvert was installed under a portion of Marina Drive that leads to Barkers Island in Superior. The end section of the culvert has been waiting for a decision by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to be connected to a pipe under East 2nd Street designed to improve the flow of water from Faxon Creek. While waiting for the DNR decision on a permit for the connection, it was vulnerable to a wash out. Heavy rains Thursday night and Friday morning created an uplift that bent the pipe blocking the flow of rain and flooding the area. Mayor Bruce Hagen says the city is now facing another expense to repair the roadway and culvert that could have been avoided. Ironically, the permit was received by the city on Friday, a year after the application was submitted and a day too late to prevent the latest flooding situation. Marina Drive is now closed to traffic until repairs are completed.
