DULUTH, MN (KDAL) - Deputy Police Chief Mike Tusken on Friday said the Duluth Police are projecting 5,000 calls this year from the one block of downtown Superior Street where the Last Place on Earth is located. He said that's up from about 3,500 the previous year and 1,500 in 2011. The entire city of Duluth is expected to take 85,000 calls this year. Tusken said that within the police department, that one block alone is treated as it's own policing district.
Testifying at Friday's synthetic drug hearing at the Sheraton Hotel, Tusken was clear that closing the Last Place on Earth was an immediate priority, but that he was not so naive to believe that closing head shops will obliterate the problem. Tusken,in Washington D.C. recently meeting with Senators Al Franken and Amy Klobuchar, said they talked about the proliferation of synthetics over the internet and through the mail will constitute the next battlefront.
