MCGREGOR, MN (KDAL) - A 72 year old McGregor woman was bitten and clawed by a sow bear in Aitkin County Monday evening. The woman's injuries were serious but not life threatening. According to the DNR, the woman had just let her dog out when it gave chase to three yearlings that ran out from under the deck. The mother bear began to run after the dog but when the woman yelled for the dog to return, the bear changed direction and came at her. The bear struck the woman's left arm and side with it's claws and knocked her to the ground. The bear retreated but attacked a second time, biting her on the right arm and leg. The woman called 9-1-1 and a conservation officer later killed the bear after the animal ran at the officer as well. The DNR says black bears are normally wary of humans but can be provoked by unusual circumstances such as a dog chasing their offspring.
