DULUTH, MN (KDAL) - A proposal for a ten dollar wheelage fee on vehicles in St. Louis County was voted down by County Commissioners at their Board meeting on Tuesday. The measure would have raised an estimated 1.5 million dollars per year for road and bridge projects in the county. The 2013 Minnesota Legislature expanded the option for the fee to all state counties with an approval deadline of August 1st to enact it in 2014. The wheelage tax was previously only available to counties in the Twin Cities Metro area. Commissioners said the proposal was not popular with residents and many had contacted them in opposition to the additional surcharge on license plates and tab renewals. The Board has the option to reconsider the matter again next year.
