BAYFIELD, WI (KDAL) - The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore has re-opened Sand Island to day use after being closed since July 1st because of bears frequenting campsites looking for food brought in by humans. The island will also open again for overnight use on July 28th unless bear related incidents resume. Park staff and volunteers have been observing bear activity and with natural foods becoming more abundant, the bears have resumed their normal behaviors. Visitors are being advised that food or items that smell like food should not be left unattended. Lockers are available for use at all campsites to keep human food and bears separated.
