DULUTH, MN (KDAL) - Although Punxsutawney Phil predicts the coming of spring on the east coast and Jimmy the Groundhog handles southern Wisconsin, the Twin Ports are counting on Spike the Porcupine to let us know if we're in for six more weeks of winter or not. Saturday is Groundhog Day and since Spike is a distant relative of the groundhog, the Lake Superior Zoo will give him the honor of predicting the weather on February 2nd. At 10 a-m Saturday, zookeepers will keep an eye on Spike to see if he notices his shadow or not. According to the legend, seeing his shadow means six more weeks of winter while no shadow predicts an early spring. By the way, if Spike decides to stay inside because of the cold, one of the Prairie Dogs at the zoo will be called to duty as a groundhog.
