Minnesota Drops Out Of Top Ten For Lowest Adult Smoking Rates


UNDATED (KDAL) - The latest report for the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention shows Minnesota has dropped to 11th among states for the lowest adult smoking rates.  In 2009, the state ranked 7th lowest.  The report shows 19 percent of adults in Minnesota smoke and Commissioner of Health Dr. Mark Ehlinger says that is far too many.  In a move that might decrease cigarette use in the state, Governor Mark Dayton has proposed a 94 cent per pack tax increase which would bring the state's cigarette tax on a par with neighboring Wisconsin.  Tobacco use continues to be the leading cause of preventable death in Minnesota and across the U-S.
