'Revolution' EP: It's 'The Waltons' With Swords

By Jean Bentley, Hollywood.com Staff

NBC's marketing for freshman drama Revolution has mostly focused on the fact that it's an adventure series set in the dystopian future, but creator Eric Kripke says that at its core, Revolution is actually a family-oriented hour with a lot of heart.

""Yes, the show is about power and yes, the show is about mythology and history and all that, but for me the show is just about these characters and really trying to find the human part of them,"" Kripke tells reporters at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. ""At its core — in the writers room we talk about this at length — this is a family show. This is The Waltons with swords. We really want to make sure that it always has an incredible amount of heart.""

Jokes executive producer J.J. Abrams, ""Eric, of course, forgets the Waltons had swords.""

That's not to say the action won't continue. When Revolution returns on March 25 for the second half of its first season, Kripke says it'll finally live up to its title.

""Monroe does have choppers and he does have a limited form of power,"" Kripke says of the show's

November cliffhanger. ""Really for me, giving him power was more about making him an unstoppable force that your heroes are totally outmanned and overwhelmed as they're trying to battle against him. We play that out, and basically we start to deliver officially on the promise of the title.""

He continues: ""The revolution begins, and the story becomes about can this family — some of them are related by blood, some of them are related by loyalty — can they stick together in the face of these overwhelming odds and this overwhelming danger, and can you maintain your soul when you're a warrior?""

Revolution returns to NBC on March 25.
