DULUTH, MN (KDAL) - A husband and wife were operating borrowed snowmobiles they were not familiar with when they had an accident in Gnesen Township early Saturday afternoon, according to a St. Louis County Sheriff's Office news release. Jennifer Marie Schumacher, 35, was following Martin Lloyd Schumacher, 36, on a trail after leaving the Vintage Run on Fish Lake. Martin Schumacher lost control around a left corner and rolled his snowmobile; as Jennifer Schumacher rounded the corner and saw the accident, she mistakenly applied the throttle instead of squeezing the brake and crashed into her husband, the report said. He complained of back and neck injuries and she complained of a leg injury. Both were treated by Gnesen first responders, EMS and St. Louis County Rescue Squad, and transported to St. Mary's Hospital by ambulance.
In a separate incident about the same time, a 46-year-old Byron, MN man was snowmobiling with a group on the Northshore Trail north of the Normanna Road when he hit an ice patch and was thrown from his sled. The man reported his helmet hit against his chest as he hit the ground, according to another Sheriff's office release. He complained of chest pain with possible broken ribs and was transported by Gold Cross ambulance.
