HAYWAYRD, WI (KDAL) - Nearly half a foot of new snow in the run-up to the 40th annual American Birkebeiner may have slowed some times, but it certainly didn't slow the drama. A photo-finish in downtown Hayward between two Italians required further review before Sergio Bonaldi was named the winner over fellow countryman Fabio Santus, according to the Birkie website. Bonaldi secured his $7,500 payday by a ski tip in what organizers bill as the largest cross country ski marathon in the country. His time in the 50 kilometer race was listed at 2:09:18.1. The course record, set by Santus in 2010, is 1:56:58. Caitlin Gregg of Minneapolis led the women with a time of 2:28:56.9.
