Haines Road to be Closed Until November

DULUTH, MN (KDAL) - Starting Tuesday, crews will begin preparations for blasting rock to widen lanes for the new design of the Haines road, which will close in West Duluth until the project's completion in November. That closure includes the intersection with Skyline Parkway, according to a St. Louis County news release. Blasting will begin in March, when an estimated 42,000 cubic yards of rock will be removed. Officials are planning to crush and reuse the rock as roadway material and to line the slopes. The June flood and resulting run-off caused major damage to the road, forcing the closure of a 2.25-mile stretch from 40th Ave. West to Morris Thomas Road. Under the new design, Haines will be widened to three lanes, with two lanes for traffic going uphill and one lane for traffic going down. Other features include a sidewalk, dynamic Chevron signs at Horseshoe Bend that will flash in sequence as a warning if oncoming motorists are approaching too quickly. The County also will add an underpass where the Superior Hiking Trail crosses Haines, and include parking spaces there for five vehicles. Hammerlund Construction of Grand Rapids is the contractor on the project, which the County said is the largest individual project ever done by St. Louis County Public Works.
