HBO's Phil Spector Biopic Takes A Few Stabbings

From Hollywood.com Staff

Whoops. Things aren't going to well for HBO's planned biopic on Phil Spector (which stars Al Pacino as you can see to the left in full Spector-mode). The biggest setback is the loss of lead actress Bette Midler due to health problems. Midler was set to play the attorney who first defended Spector when he was accused of murdering Lana Clarkson. Because of her departure, production is suspended while HBO looks for a replacement.

The next bit of trouble for the production should make the team shiver in their boots, but their aim seems to be a little off. Friends of Spector's victim claim that the writer and director of the TV movie, David Mamet, is taking a sympathetic view towards Spector and that he plans to portray Clarkson in a way that would make her seem like her death was her fault. Well, that's not good. Her friends should likely do something about this movie to ensure that their friend's reputation isn't tarnished on such a large scale. Their grand plan? To make sure the movie doesn't win any Emmys. Yep.

They're not trying to stop the movie from being made or attempting to place a warning at in the opening credits or trying to spread the word that the film portrays their friend in the wrong light. They just want to make sure the movie doesn't win any awards. Seriously, a PR executive (of course) who claims he dated Clarkson said, "we intend to put a campaign on with the Academy members to make sure there are no Emmy nominations for a motion picture that's a lie and hurts people who are alive today." Hit 'em where it hurts, I guess.
