DULUTH, MN (KDAL) - A handful of people braved the cold weather Saturday morning and joined Lake Superior Zoo staff for the Northland's version of the Punxsutawney Prediction. When staff let out the zoo's two predictors, Spike and Ahki, the porcupines scampered to opposite corners of their enclosure. Lead Zookeeper Maicie Sykes said Ahki, who was in the sun and cast a shadow, forecasted six more weeks of winter; Spike, on the other hand, ran to the shade and was without a shadow, calling for an early spring. Sykes said all on hand agreed to do the diplomatic thing and split the difference. Their prediction? Three more weeks of winter.
