RED CLIFF, WI (KDAL) - The Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa has completed their initial field work and assessment of the barrels they recovered from Lake Superior. A total of 25 barrels were brought up from the Lake bottom between July 30th and August 13th last year. A composite material of incinerated metals were found in three of the barrels and munitions parts were found in the remaining 22. Preliminary data results from a variety of tests show no immediate cause for concern regarding the safety of the water or fish consumption from the Lake because of the barrels. The US Army had dumped the barrels into the Lake in the late 50's and early 60's.
