ST. PAUL, MN (KDAL) - The Minnesota Department of Transportation has decided to end further study of the proposed westerly route for a relocation of Highway 53. 8th District Congressman Rick Nolan and Minnesota U-S Senators Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken have all praised the decision saying the route would have cost jobs, disrupted emergency responses and significantly increased travel time from Eveleth to Virginia. Several other routes are still under consideration by MnDOT. Highway 53 needs to be relocated in the area by May of 2017 to allow Cliffs Natural Resources to exercise their mineral rights under the current roadway near Virginia.
