Higher Education Bill Passed By Minnesota House

ST. PAUL, MN (KDAL) - The Minnesota House has passed the Higher Education Bill on a 84-44 vote.  The bill freezes tuition at both the University of Minnesota and the Minnesota State Colleges and University system.  It provides 150 million dollar funding increase for higher ed, the first increase in 8 years.  Duluth Representative Erik Simonson says the bill is the first step in bringing down the costs of attending college.  The bill also includes new reforms to expand legislative oversight of higher education to hold the schools accountable for budgeting practices that have come under fire for high administrative costs.  The Minnesota Senate passed their version of the bill earlier this week and the two will have to be reconciled in a conference committee.
