UNDATED (KDAL) - The Minnesota Department of Health is again reminding those who eat Minnesota caught fish to follow their guidelines to reduce the health risks from mercury. The state fish consumption guidelines are updated each year and include recommendations for limits on eating certain size and species from lakes and rivers around the state. A recent study showed eight percent of newborns in the Lake Superior basin had mercury levels higher than those recommended as safe by the EPA. The Minnesota Health Department says fish are nutritious and are an important part of a healthy diet and the guidelines are not meant to discourage people from eating fish but to reduce potential exposure to mercury contamination.
