After negotiators agreed on a compromise bill in record time Monday night, the Republican-controlled House and Senate now must try to convince Governor Dayton to sign a bill that would plug about one-sixth of the state's projected budget deficit. It would make permanent a number of cuts that Dayton's predecessor, then-Governor Tim Pawlenty, made unilaterally last summer. Dayton says he wants a comprehensive budget solution, not a "piecemeal" approach. Republican Representative Steve Gottwalt of St. Cloud says "here's a billion dollars of cuts that I think we can reasonably use to move towards a balanced budget." The budget-cut bill could be up for a vote on the House floor later this week but Speaker Kurt Zellers has indicated they're open to negotiating with the governor.
