(Minneapolis, MN) -- The University of Minnesota has fired head football coach Tim Brewster in the wake of a 1-and-6 start to the 2010 season after their loss to Purdue this weekend. Co-offensive coordinator Jeff Horton will take over the head coaching duties on an interim basis. The Golden Gophers have lost six straight games after opening the season with a victory over Middle Tennessee. They are also 0-and-3 in the Big Ten with losses to Northwestern, Wisconsin and Purdue.
Brewster signed a five-year contract in January 2007 and was given a two-year extension through the 2013 season just this past January. Maturi said Brewster will be paid the buyout clause of $600-thousand. The Gophers were just 15-and-30 under Brewster, including a dismal 6-and-21 in the Big Ten. After a 1-and-11 campaign in his first year of 2007, Minnesota made a pair of appearances in the Insight Bowl each of the last two seasons -- losing both games.
