MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) – More Wisconsinites are being killed in arguments with their spouses or other family members.

The Coalition Against Domestic Violence said it knew of 46 domestic incidents statewide which caused 59 deaths last year. That’s 23 more deaths than in 2008.

The group blames the recession for part of the increase. They say many victims cannot leave abusive homes, because they could not support themselves in these tough times.

Murders are going down in general, but victims’ advocates say domestic violence is different from other crimes.

They say the normal police strategies of putting more officers in problem neighborhoods, or targeting gangs, do not normally help prevent domestic slayings.
