(St. Paul, MN) -- At the State Capitol today, the Minnesota Senate debates and is expected to pass a one-billion-dollar bonding bill for state construction projects. But the controversy is about what is not in the bill: 89-million dollars Governor Pawlenty requested to expand the state sex offender facility in Moose Lake. Democrats say lawmakers need to take another look to see if simply locking people up at 300-dollars per inmate each day is the best way to deal with some sex offenders. The governor says Democrats have money for the arts and "little local projects" in their bill, but not dollars for a facility to keep dangerous sex offenders locked up. Just before Senate debate begins, Pawlenty will up the ante by holding a news conference to propose tougher penalties for sex offenders.
