(St. Paul, MN) -- A St. Paul man has been sentenced to nearly 36 years in prison for his role in last spring's murder of Maplewood Police Sergeant Joseph Bergeron. Twenty-one-year Joshua Martin pleaded guilty last month to aiding Bergeron's killer, Jason Jones. Martin and Jones were the subjects of a manhunt May 1st after they carjacked a vehicle in St. Paul. As police searched for them, Jones walked up to Bergeron's squad car and shot the officer in the head. Martin said he tried to distract the officer so Jones could shoot him. A short time later, Jones was shot and killed by a St. Paul policeman. Martin was arrested hours later. At his sentencing today, Martin said, quote "There ain't nothing I can say to bring back the cop. I asked God for forgiveness. I know he forgives me." Martin will not be eligible for release for at least 23 years.
