(Undated) -- The D-N-R confirms Newcastle disease is responsible for the deaths of nearly one-thousand gulls and 500 commorants in Minnesota this summer. The specific strain was confirmed this week by the National Wildlife Health Center. Newcastle disease has not yet been detected in any Minnesota poultry flocks. But conservation officers say poultry producers should monitor their flocks for signs of illness and prevent their birds from contact with wild birds. If birds do show signs of the disease, farmers should immediately contact their veterinarian or the state Board of Animal Health.
