Moviegoers prefer films with conservative values

by Greg Belfrage

Do moviegoers prefer films with strong conservative and patriotic values?

The Christian movie reviewers at Movieguide.org say they do. The group just completed the annual survey they've been doing since 2003.

Movieguide says conservative values don't just play well in America, but overseas, as well.

Movies with conservative values and content made almost four times as much money as movies with liberal, leftist, or statist values and content, averaging $90.68 million per movie in 2013 versus only $23.94 million per movie for movies with liberal or leftist content and values.

The more conservative movies included “Iron Man 3,” “The Hunger Games:  Catching Fire,” “Man of Steel,” “Turbo,” “Monsters University,” “The Hobbit:  The Desolation of Smaug,” G.I. Joe:  Retaliation,” “Hating Breitbart,” “42,” “Lone Survivor,” “Olympus Has Fallen,” “Silver Circle,” “Captain Phillips,” “Parkland,” “Somm,” “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2,” “Black Nativity,” “The Christmas Candle,” “Fast & Furious 6,” “Despicable Me 2,” “King’s Faith,” and “The Tower.”

The more liberal and leftist movies included “The Wolverine,” “White House Down,” “Lee Daniels’ The Butler,” “The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Inequality for All,” “Mandela:  Long Walk to Freedom,” “The Lone Ranger,” “The Purge,” “Spring Breakers,” “August:  Osage County,” “Philomena,” “The Fifth Estate,” “After Tiller,” “Kill Your Darlings,” “Movie 43,” “Blue Is the Warmest Color,” “The Attack,” “The Counselor,” and “Elysium.”

“Movies with more conservative values not only do better in the United States,” said Dr. Ted Baehr, founder of Movieguide®, who presented highlights from Movieguide®’s Annual Report to the Entertainment Industry at the 22nd Annual Faith & Values Awards Gala Feb. 7 at the Universal Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. “They also do better overseas.”

For example, 60% of the Top 10 Movies Overseas in 2013 had strong conservative values, but none of them had any strong liberal, leftist, or politically correct content or values.
